Hi,

Thanks, this has been quite useful to me. I did not realize these geo-TIFF's were available, as the NRC site is not exactly user-friendly. I do not use them in Google Earth, but rather in another GIS program I happen to have. Very useful for planning trips.

Kinguq.

THANK YOUUUUU

I spent ages trying to extract data from the Natural Resources website and ended up with nothing useful. I had imported the topo grid but couldn't figure out how to get the map data as an overlay.

You, sir, are a Certified Genius Map Nerd despite claiming otherwise.

How do you print scaled drawings in Gmap4?

MG---to answer your question from a long time ago, here is what i see on my screen. I think that's what you mean by a 'scaled map'. The drop down menu shows a varity of choices for a grid The display of the track is admittedly 'awkward'. I can just print that out using Firefox, for e.g.

Thanks Wotrock,

I was curious if Gmap4 had a function for printing maps to a specific scale. For example print me a map on 8 1/2 x 11 at 1:64000. Now you have a piece of paper where an inch on the map equals a mile on the ground.

Caltopo has this feature and it is slick. You can print PDF's at all kinds of different scales to different sizes of paper. For example a 1:25000 Toporama map on 11x17 paper. The maps can also include a grid (lat/long, UTM, custom... ), declination, legend etc.

Unfortunately, this feature is now only available for paid members. Lately the Canadian layers seem to be hit and miss on Caltopo too. Sometimes they just don't seem to want to load up. Caltopo seems mostly interested in the US West.

It would be great if Gmap4 or other mapping sites added this functionality.

Now I see what you mean, MG. For my purposes I don't much care about the exact scale as long as there's a grid shown, although I prefer something close to 1/50000

I recognize this thread is from 2017 and it is now 2020.
Are the topos still available? I am trying to import contour lines into Google Earth and this seems like the most promising discussion and step-by-step I have seen, but the FTP links don't lead anywhere anymore.
Thoughts?
Mike

Gmap4 is now GISsurfer. It's operated by the same guy. Black and white Canadian topos are no longer available, but the Canadian vector topo is.

Thanks Wabakimi Guy - that only seems to be 10m contours. Looking for 5m since it appears to be available for the area I am looking at in Eastern Ontario.

I switched from Gmap4 to Caltopo which is very good IMO

Apologies if this already been discussed in the mix, I haven't reviewed the whole thread and I'm not a GIS guy, I don't even use GPS. But I print what what I need from NRC's "Toporama" web page. The measuring tool is fun, and makes it easy to check the scale yourself on whatever you print.

Mike, what are trying to do as I think there are good options available already without the need to import contours into google earth?

Boy a lot has changed since I wrote that post. Looks like none of the images I had embedded in this post exist anymore. Sorry I can't recreate those. Canada has moved the location of their topo maps. You can find the indexes with Lnks to Geotiff maps here (KML/KMZ format)

Caltopo has compiled a Natural Resources Canada layer for use Google Earth. Here it is

http://caltopo.com/api/0HTD6K/superover ... /1-0-0.kml (zoom in after Google Earth loads and the layer will show up. Sometimes they are slow)

Here is a layer for 5m contour overlays

http://caltopo.com/api/0HTD6K/superover ... /0-0-0.kml

Can't guarantee how long these links will work. I highly recommend subscribing to Caltopo. Well worth the $20.
