Hi all,

Looking at doing the Smoke, Porcupine to Louisa loop and was wondering if anyone had info on the 2 portages that lead out of the sout-east end of Bonnechere to, what looks like, Lost Shoe Lake and onto McGarvey. The portages are 1250 and 645 respectively. Not sure how well used or maintained these are.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I can't answer directly but I did this loop this past September and took the other route into McGarvey, going south from Big Porc through the Double Devil's Staircase. You can read my trip report here: ... algonquin/

I did make a thread on Algonquin Adventures in October 2020 asking the same question as you and got a few responses: https://algonquinadventures.boardhost.c ... hp?id=3039

Sorry, late reply -- but the portages are in fine shape. I travelled from McGarvey through to Bonnechere and the first portage I recall having some mud, but nothing terrible (not like the name of the upcoming lake would suggest). The portage from Lost Shoe to Bonnechere had some rocky footing at times, but again nothing memorably terrible. I did this wife my wife who I do not recall lamenting over it, either.
