Lac la Croix access

Lac la Croix. Information.
Ed notes:
1. Lac la Croix settlement and Lac la Croix Ranger Station can be accessed by road from Atikokan, by water taxi from Crane Lake US, by the Dawson Portage and water taxi from Crane Lake, and by air.
2. As for the accesses to Prairie Portage and Cache Bay, “tow” means a boat ride with canoes on racks.
3. Lac la Croix and other parts of the Boundary Waters (Bottle Lake, Iron Lake, Crooked Lake, Basswood River) are easily accessed from the US and can get crowded, especially at portages.

Lac la Croix - Namakan Lake loop. Guide.
Beymer, Robert. A Paddler’s Guide to Quetico Provincial Park. W A Fisher, Virginia MN (2001).
Ed notes:
1. I have formed a loop trip by joining material on pages 76 through 87 of Beymer; the route includes The Bearpelt Route, Beymer’s Route 15.
2. The loop is described in the clockwise direction but it can be traversed counterclockwisely also.
3. The access point on the Namakan River, where I start the Route description, is reached by road from Atikokan. That road continues to the settlement of Lac la Croix on the lake of the same name; the Lac la Croix Ranger Station 2 km east of the settlement.
3. As detailed in the Route description, the Route can be accessed from various points in both Canada and the US by various means (including by air or by tow), so that it is not necessary to complete the entire loop.
4. Most of the Route lies outside Quetico PP and in fact none of it lies strictly inside the park. But the reach from the confluence of the Quetico River to the middle of Ivy Channel borders the park so be prepared regarding where you may camp.
5. The Namakan River and Namakan Lake parts of the Route lie entirely within Canada (so those arriving from the US must go through Canadian Customs and Immigration somewhere). The remainder of the Route (Lac la Croix settlement through Loon Lake and Little Vermilion Lake to Namakan Lake) parallels the International Boundary so be prepared, especially regarding where you may camp.
Route description: Namakan River at Lady Rapids (access by road from Atikokan), Hay Rapids (Hay Portage), Little Eva Lake, High Falls, Bill Lake, Quetico Rapids, Wawa Island and Quetico River confluence (access from Beaverhouse Lake), Bear Island, Threemile Lake and Bearpelt Creek confluence (access from Badwater Lake via Wolseley Lake), Ivy Falls, Ivy Channel, Snake Falls, bridge (road from Atikokan), Lac la Croix settlement and Ranger Station (road access from Atikokan; air access; water access from the Maligne River and other Routes to the south and east), past Fortyfive Island, Thompson Bay, Percy’s Point, Beatty Portage, Loon Lake, Loon Falls Portage, Loon River, 56 Rapids, Loon Narrows, Little Vermilion Lake, Little Vermilion Narrows, Sand Point Lake (access from Crane Lake US), Harrison Point, Sand Point, Namakan Narrows, Namakan Lake, up Namakan River to Lady Rapids.
