Around when is the typical fall colours peak in eastern/central Temagami? Is it around the same time as western Algonquin (end of Sept or so), given the higher latitude but lower elevation?

Don't know if this will help on the ground when fall color actually peaks this year... here are the days from a railway fall color tour which is now discontinued.

Quote:
NORTH BAY, ON, Sept. 20 /CNW/ - The Dream Catcher Express, an exciting fall colour train excursion traveling between North Bay and Temagami, will be returning for a limited six day engagement in 2010:

September 24, 25, 26 and October 1, 2 and 3.

I suspect the actual peak time will be variable from year to year... another fall color report from 2017 Oct 5 stated that color change in the Temagami area was only at 50% with green leaves still showing.

Temagami doesn't have the large stands of sugar maples that make fall color tours popular in central Ontario... it might be more like the east side of Algonquin where poplars dominate mixed in with conifers, and I know that peak time there is variable, maybe as late as Nov 1 when I paddled in one year. Don't know why the poplars are so variable while sugar maples aren't but this is the way it seems to be.

The most reliable info will likely be from Ontario Parks fall color reports... there should be color progress reports from Halfway lake PP which isn't far from Temagami.

I've sent an email to someone who still runs fall color tours in the area, no reply yet.

PS,,, I've left out tamaracks which should be common in Temagami along canoe routes... those will color up latest of all in central Ontario, no info on what happens in Temagami relative to the rest but they're probably late as well.

Thanks frozentripper! I vaguely remember the Dream Catcher being a thing but it didn't occur to me to research the dates it ran.

Received an email back from Temiskaming where fall color tours were being advertised... not far from Temagami, in response to when peak fall color will be.

I would say between the last week of September to the third week of October. With the Summer we are having, not sure how it will affect the Fall foliage? It’s also very nice to go all around Lake Temiskaming for the fall colour tour.

PS... about not being sure how this summer might affect fall color above, it may be about the drought that was causing all those forest fires. Some say that drought will make sugar maples color less brightly, causing leaves to appear bleached and washed out when otherwise the color would have been stronger. IIRC, this was what caused the poorer fall color in Algonquin along Hwy 60 last year... colors were not the most brilliant it seems but I could be wrong.

I've seen poplars looking dull and colorless some years and maybe it's for the same reason.
