Two questions:

What condition is the road in right now?

Would you leave a vehicle parked along it for two night (weekend). No guarantees, but would you feel it was safe from vandalism/theft?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Jeff Meek, aka "water hunter " would be the one to talk to.
He is pretty active on Facebook.

Yep, spoke to Jeff....he recommended the route, but hadn't been up that road recently, and had never left a car there...

good morning! I would with out a doubt leave my car there for a couple of days no problem. I have been down that road a lot more then most as a look after a scouts Canada property on the Severn and that is our access road.

I was back there 2 weeks ago and the road is in rough shape but drive able (no where near the worst i have ever seen, but also not the best). They are currently doing work on the damn/generation plant as well as some upgrades to the road, as they will be taking some large machines and transport trucks back there in the next couple of months. Keeping that in mind if you do choose to leave your car parked there make sure its well off the road.

I have been down there a few times and only had issues once. A bunch of trucks lined up to my buddies car and did a "break stand" shooting rocks all along the side of his car. Made no sense but it happened.

I would leave a normal car back there. If a weekday, I would feel even better.

It doesn't take much to deteriorate the road. We had very rough conditions in the spring/early summer. The road was then graded and crushed stone added. I was then able to get to Swift Rapids (August 6) in the same time it took get to the road/trail into Long Lake before the fix. Since then however, we had some spells of heavy rain, and the road certainly suffered. I was into Long Lake with my wife at the beginning of September and noticed the difference, although it was still better than the spring.

Thanks for the input, folks!

Warerhunter, am I correct to assume from your post that there is another way to Long Lake OTHER than Swift Rapids road?

Swift Rapids Rd. is the quickest way to Long Lake. We get into it from Sparrow Lake Road, but involves lots of portaging and beaver ponds.

Thanks!

And, to be clear, the car SHOULD be safe for two weekend nights? (in October)

Yes sir, in fact might be safer back there that time of year as hunting season may have started (hunters aren't really the problem back there its the party's and ATV'ers)

The guy with the cabin on Long Lake had a buddy get his boat shot full of holes and someone else had their car set on fire. As long as the party crowd is not there you should be fine. I am nervous every time I leave my truck there overnight.

The one story about a car on fire I know about was probably a stolen car, taken for a joy-ride up a rough road, then set ablaze. That was a few years ago.

It's a very popular, relatively easy-to-reach location that is free...it's to be expected to be popular with various groups.

Once the cool weather sets in, I expect it to be less popular.
