This mid-June my brother and I went down the French from Lake Nipissing to G'Bay. After the Portage Channel Dam portage, we came to Cradle Rapids and did a carry/run/line on river left. There really did not seem to be a trail and we kinda improvised. Maybe it was because we were early in the season; maybe few people come down this way.

A couple of weeks later I was looking at the maps in Toni Harting’s 1996 book on the French River (BTW - highly recommended!) and noticed for the first time an alternative way around. He labels it Leonard Portage. it looks like a cleaner and faster way around Cradle Rapids.

it has been almost a quarter-century since Harting put his book together. Has anyone made use of the Leonard portage trail more recently? What sort of shape is it in?

Thanks in advance for any info you have.
