I want to introduce overnight canoeing to my fiance. For the first trip, I would like something that has minimal portaging, but not busy.

So, within a few hours drive of Sudbury, where would you suggest?

Killarney?

Or for less crowds one of the loop routes around Elliot Lake

Get Hap Wilson's book on Temagami canoe routes and spend the winter narrowing down the possibilities... Temagami is scenic and could be the thing that creates interest. Florence lake with transparent water, islands and a high point, and Obabika for old growth pine forests are choices but I don't know whether these would suitable for your first-time trip out.

Also ottertooth.com for additional info on route choice, maps, features, crowded areas, etc.And message boards for more specific questions.

Dunlop Lake canoe route. the average portage is around 150 - 300m and once off of Dunlop it should be fairly quiet (Dunlop has motor boat access) . Many options available for routes.

+1 to recped’s Killarney suggestion.

Bell, Three Mile Lake, Balsam, David, Clearsilver, Johnnie, Ruth-Roy, back to Johnnie is a nice route that is fairly easy to book.
