From your pictures, that looks like the beach where the cabin was...it was set back in the bush a bit. It is on the east shore about a kilometer or two north of the boat cache. I complained about the boat cache too, but MNR doesn't want to do anything about that one....sounds like Mooseknuckle Lodge is gone though, that's a good thing.

Yes, Diablo could use some cutting. There were a few trees over the portage that we had to get over and other portages had a few such obstacles but it's nothing when you do it because this is a part of canoeing! 8)

Exactly! You do what you gotta do.

And that's why the "looking back" part of a canoe trip is so much fun! The WOW factor!!

Rob,
The beach we stayed on was south of the boat cache and just south of the first narrows going up the lake. It was after sunset when we arrived, and neither then nor in the morning did we notice any cabin.

Thanks Mel, I know which beach that is now.....it's one that is not usually too noticable, and not the one with the cabin....low water look had me confused.

Great trip report Otter Mel.

I look forward to seeing the entire set of photos that you took. Seeing the shots of the fires reminds me of my initial reaction: the billowing clouds of thick, yellowish-white smoke made me imagine that this is what an erupting volcanoe must look like.

I forgot to mention previously (I just cleaned out the food barrel, where I put it ) that we found a knife at the beginning of Diablo portage on Santoy Lake on Sep.10.2006.
If anyone lost it let me know (there wern't that many parties out there this year and it looked like a recent loss (found at the foot of a tree just before the climb begins, where the log is lying down on the lake side).

haven't been on the site for a bit mel, but can't believe your story. my fiancee and i did the steel loop just a week before. makes us sad to see that burn. it was a magnificent trip. very strange to see your pictures from just days later as my memories are so much different. don't think the knife is ours. there was one car at the takeout from virginia. presumably they made the run between us.
