In May of 2017, we ventured to Obatanga Provincial Park, a non-operating provincial park north of Wawa Ontario. Rainy, windy and cloudy, but still a great adventure.

Despite it's non-operational status, permits are still required for backcountry use. For permits, contact White Lake Provincial Park:

Our route had us depart Hammer Lake and journey down the Dog (University River) before entering Obatanga and Knife Lakes. From there, we journeyed up Knife creek tot he old park headquarters and campground on Burnfield Lake. There are a few other lakes to explore, notably we got into Heart Lake this Thanksgiving (hands down most scenic lake in the area).

Check out the trip video for more!

Thanks for posting. The video really captures the beauty of the area. You may have had bad weather, but you had really good water levels. The footage shot downstream from University Lake looks like a lot of fun. It's been about 20 years since I've been to Obatanga. Thanks for reminding me about the great canoeing in this area. Now I am itching to go back.
