The last week in August and the frirst in September 2015 found us on the Berens River. Started our trip in Pikangikum Ont. and paddled to Berens River on Lake Wpg. Using our Pakboat the 3 of us were able to fly in right from Winnipeg with Perimeter Aviation. At the end of the trip we had another Perimeter flight right back to town, very easy logistically! Was a little more than $ 700.00 for both flights plus 3 people and extra gear.
High water levels in the first week on the upper Berens but from Family Lake waters divide into two rivers and it was more reasonable from there. Used the information from the "Canoe Atlas of the Little North" on the first part and Hap Wilsons book for the second. Weather was great (mostly) especially calm on the first part with the big lakes, otherwise we would have had a tough paddle.
Camping was good troughout the trip. Wildlife consisted of many Eagles and River Otters. Met only a few native peoples en route and two fly-in fisherman at Sharpstone Lake, no other canoes.
It was a looong paddle into a heavy headwind through the village of Berens River but we got rewarded by the great food at the Hotel at the edge of the Lake!

Great photos! I love the one of your cook setup with the boat in the background.

Rappi, thanks for whetting my appetite for another Lake Winnipeg East Side canoe trip!

Given the CDN $2400.+ for a De Havilland Beaver pick-up from Berens River Village back to Bissett Lake or Red Lake, perhaps renting a Pakboat for a couple of weeks looks like a much cheaper way to make the trip happen. Even buying one - the 170 model looks pretty good! - would make possible all sorts of canoe trips that I have brushed off because of accessibility issues.

I too loved the river edge photo with the canoe and cook fire--a real classic image with the pot and reflector oven as well as the red canoe. Look closely and see it's also a pakcanoe. Impressive to trip 3 in a folding canoe.

It's also nice to hear and see about trips on the upper Berens, which does not get much canoe tripping use. Your utilizing commercial flights into and out of communities is also a great idea.
