Maliseet Trail. Information.
The site
http://www.maliseettrail.com/
provides a wealth of information on the First Nations trail between the Saint John and Penobscot watersheds, specifically from Benton NB to Old Town ME.
Ed note: The map at
http://www.maliseettrail.com/Maps&Descr ... REPNER.htm
shows the trail as crossing the ME-NB border at North Lake.
Reaches in NB, from the ME border: Metagmouchschesh Portage to First Eel Lake; a stretch along the Eel River; a lengthy portage (starting roughly near Benton) to the Saint John River at Fort Meductic (not to be confused with the present-day village of Meductic, which is at the confluence of the Eel River with the Saint John River). The Benton-Meductic portage, as shown on that map, would however seem to cross the Benton Ridge.
On the Maine side, the trail goes up the Mattawamkeag River from the Penobscot, up Baskahegan Stream, by a portage to East Grand Lake and up a stream to North Lake and the border.

Coastal Routes.

Caution.
Those of us with a background in lake and river paddling, even those comfortable in big water, might reflect on whether we possess the knowledge, equipment and skills necessary to deal with the very different hazards associated with coastal paddling. A course or a guided trip might be a good idea before attempting any of the coastal Routes described in the links given below.
From what I've read, every responsible paddler carries a VHF radio and is well versed in its operation.
