A friend and I will be canoeing in August 2002 from Whitehorese to Dawson City. If there is an emergency, how can you get help? Do cell phones work - and if so which ones? Are there places in Whitehorse to rent satellite phones - are they necessary?

Eric

Cellphones will only work while VERY near to Whitehorse, after that there is no cell service available all the way, not even within Dawson City. Most of the Yukon River is extremely remote, and if you feel that you need a form of emergency communication, a Sat phone would probably be the best answer. There will probably be enough traffic on the river that you will see another party just about every day. There are cabins and camps that you will pass on occasion (once or twice a day) who may or may not have emergency communications.
We just finished the three hundred Km section from Minto to Dawson City yesterday and decided before the trip against taking a Sat phone. Thankfully we didn't have any emergencies to contend with! Heavy wind and two foot whitecaps on the river were the only thing that slowed us down. I hope you get calmer winds! Have a safe trip!

Cell phones dont work. I used a Satillite phone last year during a death in the family at Carmacks and Minto etc.
You can rent a satillte phone in Whitehorse at a place called Total North. It is located near the Wellesley hotel just to the north a block or so. They cost about $300 for a month to rent. Well worth the wait. You can also purchase one on Ebay for about the same price.

It would then seem that buying a satellite phone on ebay is the way to go. Do you know of any disadvantages to doing it that way - such as xtra charges per call or having to sign up for a long term plan when you only need it for 2 weeks? This is all new to me. Thanks for your help.
