I did this in 2012 and went back to Lows Lake in New York state's Adirondacks this past October (2014). I paddled in about 12 miles and set up my small wall tent with a small wood stove for heat. I didn't hunt very hard, never saw a deer and spent just a couple of days of sitting under some big hardwoods enjoying the woods.
New York State dropped it's non resident deer license from $145 to $100 this past year, and they throw in a bear tag and small game license. Last year that would have totaled about $275. The camping is free, you just need to get a free permit for a stay over 3 days. They also dropped their non resident fishing license and it runs from the date you purchase it for 1 calender year.
Here are some pictures and a link to a couple of videos of the trip.
