I have just recently learned of these. I used to take Pristine as a back-up for my filter but it's a bit inconvenient at times, esp if I am paddling. Aquatabs would seem to be ideal as a backup but the do not kill crypto. Is that much of a concern in Ont lake waters?

Only one datapoint - our Scout troop had to use them as a backup last month in La Verendrye and no reports of problems a month later. Knock on wood :-)

I've been using them for the past 2-3 years in place of a PUR-style pump filter with no problems. Pumping water is an annoying nuisance which for us tends to lead to compromising on the frequency and volume of water drunk throughout the day. The pump, small and light as it is, is a lot bulkier than 60-80 Aquatabs stored in a very small and accessible Nalgene bottle. The Aquatabs aren't entirely taste-free, but are much more neutral-tasting than the chlorine or iodine tablets/drops of old. I'm not sure, though, how effective a defense they are against the most evil of bacteria.

Steripen might be a handy accessory if your'e not adverse to a little item and some AA's.

I just learned from another thread about Micropur. They are supposed to kill crypto as well. Anyone use those?

another datapoint - not sure why I did not think of this sooner - on this past trip we used aquatabs to purify dish water without wasting fuel to boil then time to let it cool. Normally I only have them as an emergency backup.

I've used aquatabs in the past without issue. Make sure to use the right size (some are 1l some are more) using the wrong one either will be less effective, or impart chemical taste.

The last few years I've been using Pristine - works on Crypto, easy to make while canoeing (on flat water), and no taste.

Thx---I have used Pristine. What I had was 2 liquids that I needed to add. That would be quite a PITA while paddling---a least for
me it would

I've used Aquatabs for years now, probably since 2013, on water from Algonquin lakes as well as Quetico. Never had a problem. I don't get my water from stinky sloughs, though. Neither do i get it from below the epilimnion in the middle of the lake. Mostly just scooped from the water edge.
