I apologize, because this post is less about a canoe/kayak route and more about a destination. Last winter on a trip to the Florida Keys, we took a ferry across 110 km of ocean to a small group of coral reefs and islands known as the Dry Tortugas. Here, in the middle of nowhere stands the crumbling remains of the largest all-masonry fort constructed in the U.S. - Fort Jefferson, the center piece of the Dry Tortugas National Park. There are 10 primative camp sites on the island, and you can make arrangements with the ferry operator to transport a kayak over. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to do this, however this would make a great winter paddling destination, as there are numerous islands nearby to explore. The fort itself is a great place to check out, and there is excellent fishing and snorkelling as well. Here's a link to a 5 min. video we put together: ... 4w&index=1

Cheers -Wayne-
