Last night's TVO Water Week program on Steve Paikin's Agenda at 8 PM included an outlook on the Great Lakes by John Riley, senior scientist with the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Well worth a listen in the audio recording below.

Some of the developments, both positive and negative, relating to the Great Lakes' well-being...

- a trend to private landowners allowing their lands to return to a more natural state through restoration and prevention of development

- a prediction that Toronto's population will increase by three million over the next 20 years, poor outlook for ecological well-being

- most of the new residents will have no real connection to natural areas (nature deficit disorder)

- in spite of new laws being created to protect the Great Lakes and natural areas, little money or effort is being made available for actual implementation

- when asked to comment on how well the current Liberal administration is fulfilling their mandate for protection and restoration... "they're running on air"

- the performance of the conservatives' Harris government OTOH, provided some real successes with natural areas protection
