I was in Walmart today in Kitchener and cruised the food aisles as a hunter/gatherer :P and found Equinox (Quebec)Maple Flakes. Checked ingredients, pure maple syup. Sounded good, I hate fake chemical stuff. Bought two 113 g boxes normally $7.98 ea for $1.50 ea. Had to sample it back at my vehicle. So good...to bad I didn't have time to go back and clean the shelf off.

Yeah, new light weight sweetener for oatmeal, coffee, tea....

Oy, run, don't walk, back to clear the shelf.

Local Sobey's store:

71grams in a fancy schmancy grinder: $8.99

71grams, just the flakes: $4.99 (none on the shelf, of course)

:o

Maple sugar (flakes) can be made from real Maple Syrup quite easily.

Boil the Maple Syrup over low to medium heat for five to ten minutes stirring constantly. Pour a thin layer onto a flat sheet, let cool and than use a pastry roller to break into sugar.

There is a technique required in terms of temperature, time and volume of Maple Syrup to use, but once you have that mastered, you'll achieve perfect Maple Sugar.

Reconstitute the sugar in boiling water. No more sticky worries about spilled or leaking syrup containers.

Try Google for detailed instructions.

WALLMART!!! Why were you in a wallmart? If it costs 5x as much somewhere else - buy it there. That store saves nobody any money.

A common practice is to demonstrate to their employees on how to supppliment their income with social assistance programs. A better suggestion would be to increase their product prices and employees wage.

I got my maple sugar from a local sugar stand..but it costs 9 bucks for 454 grams...

I keep forgetting to check for it at Wal Mart, I couldn't be that lucky.

For some of us WalMart IS the local store for some things. I cant afford to drive 150 k for stuff I can get there.

I don't care much for Wallmart and their practises and rarely even go in there. The bullying of the Rubbermaid company did it for me....but if they are the first and only to sell shrimp, crab, salmon in foil pouches in Canada, I will stash my principals temporarily in my back pocket again. 5X as much eh? I would have to go without then. :-?

I drive a schoolbus and pick up the children of a Wallmart exec. Should I refuse their Christmas gifts to me? I try to strike a happy :) medium in this world.
