Just found out about this. My Ova Easy bag (bought from MEC Toronto last fall) appears to be affected! :( I know this is a popular item among canoeists, so I thought I'd post it here. Apparently not a big problem if you thoroughly cook the eggs, though...

Details here. http://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsi ... 14-release

I am baffled at what to do. I have a half used packet involved in the recall.

Last summer I obviously did not die or get sick from the eaten half.

Thanks for the warning. I was intending to try Ova Easy for the first time this year. I've found fresh eggs to last a week, but am considering an alternative. Speaking of which, a couple years ago I had the brilliant idea of cracking our dozen eggs into a Nalgene bottle pre-trip. That's not the stupidest part. The bottle wasn't clear, it was semi-transparent green. Every morning as I poured out a couple eggs, for some reason Dr Seuss came to mind. Anyway, by day four I was getting suspicious, and maybe just a little smarter. I incinerated them, and switched to oatmeal. I've since cleaned out the bottle, and now it holds my Scotch. Everyone is afraid to touch it, cause I'm sipping from a green bottle. That work for me. It would be ridiculously ironic if I switched to Ova Easy from fresh eggs, only to get sick. Maybe I should canoe trip with a chicken.

Note that the word "may" is in the warning. Also read that no illness has been reported even though the period covered is a year.

Your transport of cracked eggs was riskier but there was no government tester on your trip.

If anyone has concerns maybe its best to contact Nutriom.

I checked my packet and it was not listed.
Ova Eggs is a great product.

Yeah, I heard from a couple of different sources that it was a good product. Bought the package and never got around to using it. Now this. Could happen to any company in the egg business, I suppose.
I'll give them another try on a spring canoe trip. I want them to work and be good.

I wouldn't second guess the FSIS on this recall. On the other hand, I still intend to stock up on Ova Easy for this season. I've heard only good feedback from users of this product.

Does anyone know any Canadian vendors who sell Ova Easy?

I don't see it on MEC's website and I contacted Nutriom and they said they are not "currently" shipping to Canada. I may get some shipped to the border since it's not a far drive from Winnipeg to pick it up but I would prefer to purchase from a Canadian retailer.

Can you order from the Nutriom site and ship to Canada?
(was not currently shipping to Canada referring to retailers or distribution or to their website store?)

Do you know anyone heading to the USA, they are easy to find for sale stateside.

No, you cannot ship to Canada from the Nutriom site. Under the country selection it will only let you select the US.

I'll probably just get some shipped to Pembina. I'll probably wait and see if another reason to head to Pembina comes up in the next while (or if I find a retailer in Canada before then).

I was just at the Far North Symposium, I could have picked you up some!

Neil, I would love to get some OvaEasy eggs. If you order to Pembina, I would be willing to join in the purchase. And I live in Winnipeg.

I also did the cracking eggs in the Nalgene. Never again. If its not refrigerated it really wont keep, when I got home the smell was horrendous and I wound up throwing away the Nalgene.

Even kept cold they wont keep long, better to stay in shell as long as possible.

It looks like MEC has stopped carrying Ova Easy, I assume because of the recall. I got a letter from MEC just yesterday noting that I had purchased the product from them and they would honour the recall. I still plan to stock up on Ova Easy for this season. It really is an excellent product and I'm guessing that the company, once burned, means even less likelihood of problems in the future.
