I have a hankering for salmon with cream cheese on tortilla's. Has anyone dehydrated a tin of sockeye salmon before? any tips or tricks?

I dehydrate tins of tuna, usually for making tuna casserole. I also dehydrate mushrooms, onion & green pepper with it. In the context of the tuna casserole dish it works quite well. I reconstitute the tuna either by adding water earlier in the day and keeping it in my pack, or by adding boiling water to it from my pasta pot, and intermittently heating it over the stove or fire briefly in order to speed up the rehydration.

You'll want to separate your salmon thoroughly before dehydration - flake it out. Otherwise you'll have trouble reconstituting it on trip.

Typically, the way I rehydrate my meals on trip is to add water to the ziplock before setting out each day. I put the ziplock into a wide-mouth utility nalgene container incase the bag leaks. When I make camp later in the day I just add a little splash of water for good measure and heat it through. Done. I conserve a lot of fuel this way when using a stove.

Thanks Mike. That was my 15 year old son posting in prep for his independent trip. I will pass the recipe on. I can't figure out why he doesn't know we have dehyrdated salmon already done down stairs :lol: Teens!

I'd guess canned fish packed in water would dehydrate better than packed in oil.
