I am looking for a boat to do primarily flat water tripping in Ontario with my family. We are 2 small kids, a medium sized dog and my wife and I. My wife is new to canoeing. I have had her out a few times in my old coleman canoe and a few times in my tandem kayak, thats about it.

I am focused on affordable boats with high initial stability, good load carrying capacity that aren't going to be too tough to keep tracking on open water with just me paddling. I might do the odd casual down river race with it with the kids, but racing and white water are not primary concerns.

Right now I am considering a new fibreglass Novacraft Haida 17, or a used expedition kevlar Swift Algonquin 17. Curious if any one has paddled these two boats and what they think?

Can't comment on the Algonquin 17, but my first canoe was a glass Haida, just under 70 lbs. Cavernous and well behaved, with initial stability coming out the wazoo, but not easy to manage solo in the wind.

I have an Algonquin 17. Love it. Packs lost of gear and room for the kids if they are young/small. I find it a pretty fast boat and easy to keep going straight.

I have an old Algonquin 15 and like it. I think they are the same shape but just 2 feet longer and you’d have a great family boat.
Plus the Kevlar would be way lighter.
Happy Paddling.
