I'm reading The Prospector - North of Sixty by Ted Nagle and Jordan Zinovich.
A group of six men in three canoes are exploring Great Slave Lake in the late 1920's near Pine Point just south of Resolution. One morning two of them set out with their shotguns walking the shore in search of geese.
They come upon a bull moose in a clump of birch, tearing off the leaves and lower twigs. One of them starts digging intently in his pocket for the candle stub they carried to start campfires. He opens the top of one of his 12 gauge shells and pours the shot out into his palm. He lights the candle and drips wax over the pile, wads it together, stuffs it back into the casing and closes the top. He approached to within 25 yards, fires the wax cartridge and his partner watches in amazement as the moose topples over on it's nose, then struggles to it's feet and charges.
With the remaining four shots in the 12 gauge pump he was able to finish off the animal. They hauled the meat back to their camp at Dawson Landing and smoked most of it, probably because it was near the end of August.
