I expect that most of us know of P G Downes through his "Sleeping Island".
Maybe it's known to others here (I didn't find a reference in my search of the CCR Forums), but I just stumbled across an account new to me:
"The narrative of P.G. Downes’s trip by canoe, boat, and plane from Ile a la Crosse to Great Bear and Great Slave lakes in 1938, ..."
The narrative includes photos.
Here are the links:
Part 1

Part 2
http://pubs.aina.ucalgary.ca/arctic/Arctic38-3-231.pdf
Parts 3 and 4
?? (I'm looking for them)
Part 5
http://pubs.aina.ucalgary.ca/arctic/Arctic39-2-164.pdf
The last lists references to other (?) Downes' travels.
