I'm driving the route from Calgary to Banff and Kootenay National Park.

I managed to get one night Aug 1st booked at Johnston Canyon near Banff. I am looking to get a booking for one night, July 31st in the Canmore area. Basically no service car camping or short walk-in, and away from highway noise. There are so many choices that it is baffling.

Also, I'd prefer to not book ahead and pay 12 bucks to reserve if it isn't actually necessary. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Morning,
I can't really recommend camping spots, but the nicest drive between Calgary and Canmore is along highways 40 and 742. The 742 is gravel, but it is a pretty drive with places to pull over and go hiking if you wish. We also saw plenty of wildlife on the 742. I'm sure you could camp back there, but I can't remember if there were any serviced sites. There were some picnic areas. I'm sure you could just crown land camp back there, but not really sure.

Thanks Rab. According to google maps, most of that areas is designated as provincial park. I am Ontario resident, so I don't know what the rules are. For the one night I am planning, I don't mind paying if I have to. Mainly trying to figure out if I need to book way ahead or just show up on a weekday in mid-summer.

Ok, I looked again- I found two campgrounds - 26$/night. These are where I'd be heading to get away from the noise of highway 1.
