Having reparied one cedar canvas canoe my friends assume I'm an expert ( I wish!)

I've been asked for advice about repairing a Chestnut Y stern and I'd be very grateful if anyone can help with its identity and likely age. I can find no marks on stems or wherever I'm afraid.

Photos are here: https://nessmuk-build.blogspot.com/2019 ... stern.html

Thanks

Well

From the photos and specs that I have I’m thinking you have a chestnut Marsh.
That is the 17 foot Prospector Vee stern model.
The length, rib thickness and spacing, width, number of thwarts and seat type all
match Chestnut specs.
Definitely not an Ogilvie or Freight canoe.

Don’t Fiberglas it!

I agree with Pook. It is a criminal act to throw fiberglass on a canoe like that. It is the death sentence for a canoe that could easily last another hundred years if restored properly. Suggest this to him: there are people who re-canvas a canoe and then fill the cloth weave with epoxy instead of any of the other filler options. I think it takes some prep to keep the epoxy from bonding to the wood, but it gives you a very hard and reasonably light skin, which it is possible to remove in future when structural repairs become necessary. There are discussions of this on the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association forums. There is a lot of knowledge there and a lot of willingness to help. Check them out.
