Heads up APP trippers...and especially those who like to fish for spring lakers. No reservations before May 14. Anyone know if you can just show up before then? Or no tripping at all before May 14? Not sure if I like the new online reservation system either...

Unless something has drastically changed, Algonquin is open all year. The rule has been that you can winter camp anywhere, as long as you're out of sight of any trail. No need of campsites, because half the time you couldn't find them in the snow anyway.

We never needed reservations because so few people are present. I'll bet they're citing May 14 because the reservation operators figure they can't make any money before then.

If in doubt, call the park.

The last few years they have not been giving out back country permits during ice out. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

when i was at bent last spring (may 14th) the camp ground was closed ? l.o.l. ,, people where camped all over the landing access point, camping trailers set up , trucks, tents, just jammed with people and gear,,
many trippers had already left for interior campsites, with high water levels and much snow still on the portage trails.
there was a chopper rescue north of highway 60,, approx may 15th,, 4 canoe heads suffering from hypothermia.
ya never know?

I spoke with both Ontario Parks and APP staff. No backcountry camping permits will be issued before May 14, 2020.

I just got off the phone with Ont parks, who then had me call Algonquin park offices directly, to verify this May 14th date. What was explained to me, was that they were not offering any reservations prior to May 14th. However depending on the ice out, permits could be avail before May 14th at a first come first serve basis. So really from what I can gather, the only change is that you cannot reserve your campsite prior to May 14th. Same ice out stipulations apply as previous years.
